The number one thing cited by agents and editors worldwide when asked about the most important quality they look for in a manuscript is: VOICE! Voice is difficult to explain…it has something to do with how the characters tell their story. But we all know how a great voice can carry readers along on the journey of the story, feeling satisfied once they reach their destination.
However what do you do when you’re writing for kids and you’re not a kid anymore? It’s a huge challenge. It’s not enough to say, “My grandchildren love this story I made up for them so it must have a great voice.” It’s not going to work if you’re using outdated slang or don’t know what the current trends are or try to dumb down your story because it’s for a young audience.
Listen to these two agents (one who’s an agent and a successful YA author) as they explain how you can create a compelling kid lit voice, even if it’s been a long time since you were in school.
